“Stop and Jot” Strategies

Things to remember:

  • write quick notes that deepen your understanding of the text

  • note any new or surprising information

  • write any questions you have while reading

 

You can use statements like-

I noticed…

Theme

All stories have a setting, characters and a plot. Authors of fiction use these story elements to reveal a message or theme. A story's theme is usually not stated directly. The reader can determine the theme by looking at the way story characters behave and what they learn.

Some common themes are:
